The Phone Call
I just got the call; oddly enough it was my Uncle, Gerry, rather than Mom. His is one of those voices which is unrecognizable under these circumstances, so if his first word hadn't been my "real" name, I would have thought it was a wrong number.
At around 04:00 on February 17th, Bernard Joseph Pilny died peacefully in his sleep. He had turned 79 ten days prior, and managed to hold out just long enough that he didn't die on Mom's birthday, the 16th. I hope they don't remember that I volunteered to sing at his funeral.
