Same here, between the 'oddities' of my family to the much more open-mindedness of my religion, I have a hard time fathoming how out government gets away with this sort of crap. The only thing that comforts me is this - religious figures that feel threatened with the loss of real secular power tend to get more and more overt and loud, in the hopes that it will keep that power from slipping away.
And kudos on the brave clergy-member who went against the rules to do something truly good.
