[Updated 30 January 2015 to include the infection and subsequent hospitalization in September.]

Some people have been suggesting I blog, so I'm vaguely looking into reviving this LJ account. A lot has happened since the last post, in April of 2013. With regards to that post -- nope, I didn't win the trip to space. Sniffle.

This is a quick catch-up for those who don't follow me on Facebook. Those who do will probably find this to be quite familiar.

  • I'm still married to [livejournal.com profile] callicrates. April 11th of 2015 will mark our 17th wedding anniversary.

  • We still have three kitties, in order of age: Heidi, Sean, and Jenny

  • We still live in New Mexico.

  • I've taken up knitting. I actually have a (mostly dormant) knitting blog at spundreams.blogspot.com

  • My sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October 2013 and declared NED in May of 2014, just before her wedding.

  • In September of 2014 I developed a severe infection from a popped blister and landed in the hospital. The infection was brought under control within three days using an end-stage antibiotic. Unfortunately the antibiotic sent me into stage four kidney failure, necessitating another several days in the hospital. The infection left a large wound on my foot which over the next few months split into two smaller and one fairly large wound. My kidneys were declared back to normal in late December and the largest of the wounds on my foot was declared healed in early January of 2015.

  • My sister, my mom, and I all have the same mutation in the BRCA2 gene which means we're at a higher risk for certain types of cancer.

  • Probably most of what I write about, especially in the near future, will be the measures I'm taking with regards to the BRCA2 revelation.

  • Though I may note on Facebook that I've made an entry to LJ, I do not plan on cross-posting from LJ to Facebook.

  • I will try to update my Dreamwidth account in real time as well, but it will be a mirror LJ rather than an independent blog.

That's all for now. I may add things to this; if so I will try to remember to note the date of the update in the edit.

On September 2nd, 1975, the Universe gave the Earth a gift in the form of a person named Andy. Andy, known on LJ as [livejournal.com profile] callicrates is, IMNSHO, the best husband in the world, and I am the luckiest person in the world to be in the know.

I have a feeling I've made posts before in which I list his numerous good qualities, but I'm going to do it again this year anyways. Please feel free to add to the list, since there are a lot of qualities indeed to list, and I am a Bear of Little Brain (probably ™).

Andy is kind, gentle, patient, and caring. He has a devastating sense of humor and a way with words. He has excellent taste in music and books, and can MST3K with the best of them for movies and TV. He is brilliantly smart, and a wonderful teacher. He has a way with animals; I've seen a dog who was noted to be terrified of men walk right up to him and ask to be petted, and our cats miss him when he's on travel and love him when he's home. He understands the value of teddy bears and other stuffed animals, and when the hotel cleaning people do special things with Cassie, his stuffed calico travel kitty, he sends pictures home. He understood how important college was to me and let me spend nearly a year away from home in order to finally obtain my degree at the school which I had never ceased to love. He takes awesome photographs. He is a dedicated friend who does anything within his power to help friends in need. He's one of those people who, when he says "Call me at any time," means it. He knows when to encourage and when to advise a person to walk away gracefully. He works hard, and some of his efforts lead to nothing shy of miracles.

And when it comes to talented, he's multi-faceted. The first one I ever encountered was his raytracing, an art form which translates math into images. The most enduring roses I've ever received were featured in a spiraling vase in one of his raytraces. The most recent of his hobbies which I have been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of are his tessellations, all of which begin life as a single piece of paper, none of which are cut, taped, or manipulated in any way save folding. Some of his other origami is linked from the tessellations page and is also worth looking at; included are mobiles for the children of various friends and some of the more traditional forms of origami.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, because he is just that incredible of a guy. I am so grateful to have met him, let alone shared his life with him. And I love today, because it means the world has had him for another year, and been a better place for his presence.

<sappy>I love you, Andy</sappy>

Andy-Day!

Today was [livejournal.com profile] callicrates' birthday. He went to work as usual, which gave me time to sleep after my usual nocturnal stint of activity, which included the not-so-usual baking of a birthday cake. He's been opening one present a day since Saturday, but today he got most of them. He'll have one more each day until Saturday.

I made his favorite dinner and even remembered to chill the Martinelli's sparkling cider. When [livejournal.com profile] ljedi came over to medicate Sir Hiss we invited her in for the cake, sang "happy birthday" (which I started so that it would stay within my vocal range) and he blew out candles.

Aside from the gift-a-day thing on the days preceding and following it was a very traditional birthday party, and I think he liked it. Of course, I got the best gift of all -- him.

I had originally planned to post this to a journal open only to [livejournal.com profile] callicrates, but then I realized that there is no shame in admitting to loving someone and telling the world exactly why.
