While there may be some fringe religions which practice ritual animal/human sacrifice even today, for the most part the rituals of tonight will be committed by angry slime emulating what they think devil-worship entails.
Your discussion of sacrifice and comparative religion was a fascinating read, but I think this hits home hardest as the source of danger to animals on Halloween. Far from being self-described Pagans, I suspect most Halloween animal-mutilators aren't self-described as any particular faith. They're just getting into the occult mythology of the day (separate from any legitimate beliefs associated with this day), and acting out a fantasy. I'm reluctant to use the term "ritual" even.
Our cat is all-black. He's an indoor cat anyway, but he'll also be closed up. In the bedroom where he can curl up under the down comfortor -- something he seems to actively prefer when there's a lot of disruption.
If we have a chance, mebbe we'll drop by Kitty City and say, "Hi." I'd really love some more advice or recommendation of an expert to talk to with regard to helping our cat accept another cat.
