They cannot charge her for the full month's rent. At worst, they can only charge her for the actual time she stayed, from the time she accepted the keys until the time she hands them back. It must be prorated, and if she paid for any days in advance that she doesn't stay there, then they must refund her. If they don't, she can sue them.
OTOH, if she /signed/ anything stating otherwise, she might be up the creek.
As for the quilt, if you have the tracking number, you can call them up at 1-800-PICK-UPS and ask them to redirect it. Or, if they insist upon delivering it once before allowing a redirect, you ask them to insist that only the addressee may sign for it. Or, best yet, just ask them to hold it at the local office and simply pick it up there.
