being an army brat..I;'ve traveled with cats LOTS..even done the on the plane overseas thing..but also the car bit..went from FL to KS once and NC to AR *and back again..long story..second time was with a cat AND a rabbit*
go with the hard carrier..and use a seatbelt to keep it in place, that's what we always did. give the kitties a blanket and toys..but do NOT put food or water in it..that gets messy. be prepared to stop at rest stops and offer water and food and let them out on a leash and harness. and to clean out the carrier *one of my kitties with in the first hour always had an accident* they will meow..they will fret but as long as you have them in the shade and with air blowing on the carrier they will be fine for that time in the carrier. and with being able to let them out *as opposed to plane rides* they will be much less cramped..just make sure each has their own carrier and that they can stand up fully and turn around in them
