Dec. 21st, 2002 11:19 pmAndy and I did manage to get up in time for breakfast with the folks, and accordingly broke our fast. The buffet wasn't as large as the Sunday version, but it had the best crepes. At first I thought they were peach, but I'm not so sure now. Anyway, Andy got some of Erin's pictures from commencement. It's occasionally very provident that she got the same type of camera from her parents the same year we did, since Andy can do wonders with it.
His folks had to leave at about 10:30, taking the same flight we'll be on Monday. Erin and Owen are going directly back to Indy rather than returning to downstate NY and immediately turning around and flying to Indy. I'd say I missed them except I'll be seeing them again in some 36 hours and change. It was a nice visit, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again as well as Andy's various aunts, grandparents, and uncles. There's also a chance we may get to see some friends of his from undergrad-land: Dave, Sherry, and
turnberryknkn. I really hope we can manage to see some of them, preferably all. So I'm greedy.
After they left Andy went to Best Buy to get some cables, and I went to Wal-Mart to get some components of what has become a tradition for us. I can't say more because some of those affected read this journal. At any rate, we came home, I boxed them, then remembered that I'd missed a third recipient. Anyway, I went back to Wal-Mart, got some more components, then headed over to Staples to send them all. Staples had a sign up saying "overnight and 2nd day air only", and I almost left because several of the packages would have cost way too much to ship. On a hunch, though, I asked if they were only accepting those methods or if they meant we could use only those if trying to get it there by the 25th, and fortunately I was still allowed to ship via ground.
Then I went to Whole Foods and got Andy some sun-dried tomato bread (he's never tried it before and I was planning on getting rosemary sourdough, his old standby, but I know he likes sun-dried tomatoes so I took a chance) to go with tonight's dinner, then braved Harris Teeter to get mozzarella cheese for the garlic toast he'd make. After depositing some checks at the bank I got gas and went home. It appears that the presents I got for Andy got together and spawned some new ones. I hope we can remember who wrapped which.
Mom called. Grandpa is back in the hospital. The initial diagnosis was heart attack, but now they're leaning toward pneumonia. They'll find out for sure after running more tests. Mom has our cell phone number in case there's any news while we're in Indy, but I really hope not to hear her voice -- she'll e-mail if the news is good.
A little while after she phoned we got a call, this time from Tanner. He and Janell wanted to know if we wanted to join them (and Bram) for dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant. I'm afraid you must wait and have dinner tomorrow. Well, at least the dinner I'd planned, and not because either kitty got at the main course. Anyway, we had a great time. We chatted about stuff as varied as the lawsuit against J.K. Rowling, Onion articles, and copyright issues, plus the stuff to segue from one topic to the next. Bram was cute as usual, and was fairly well-behaved. He's still a bit confused as to how to work his sippy cup, though. They also gave us Christmas cookies and agreed to look in on Thena and Gail.
Speaking of lines from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and of our two kitties, apparently Thena has been availing herself of our Gorey-illustrated copy while we've been otherwise occupied. I was mending some pants today and she leaped on my lap in the middle of my sewing. If our sweet placid Foo is channeling the Rum Tum Tugger, I don't think I want to know who Gail would emulate.
We've decided to pack tomorrow so that we can just leave on Monday. We're planning on traffic and airport snarls and hoping they don't materialize. Luckily the plane rides consist of two relatively short hops, and I believe we have a generous layover. I imagine I'll still be able to spam y'all while I'm there, though I won't make any threa^H^H^H^H^Hpromises.
