I think the small carriers would be a better idea. Cats feel more comfortable in smaller, darker places. With your hyperactive cat, you might want to consider a small dose of a sedative like Valium. I had to take my cat on an airplane trip from Los Angeles to Orlando and back, and we gave him about 1/3 a pill and he was good and relaxed the whole trip.
