A few minutes after Andy got up Gail decided that I needed to be up too, and dashed onto the bed, bounced off my stomach, and dashed out of the room. I tried to return to sleep and she repeated the maneuver, though I was on my side at that point. I gave up and got up, although the kitties did not get fed until their normal time.

We'd been expecting a certain range for our car's air conditioner. It was a range, but we had budgeted for the high end. Today Andy found out that it will be the very high end and a quarter again, and that's if nothing else goes wrong. Al, the mechanic, actually had Andy pull up some web pages and walked him through what needed to be done. It'll take a week to get all of the parts together, though, so we have the car again. Part of me can't wait for next week; the other part wonders if maybe we just suffer out the rest of the summer. It's not that we can't afford it, just that at the moment it seems so expensive. It's probably also part of my mood speaking, and I know if Andy reads this and says "We're fixing the AC anyway", the part of me which is relieved will outnumber the part which says we can live with it broken for another month.

Andy talked to the person who was his boss's boss when he interned for SGI. She was sort of hoping for a September start, but Andy is taking a month off after he defends. If anything a month is not enough -- Andy works through weekends and with the exception of December holidays (during which he typically checked in at the very least and remotely fought a few fires) he has not had two contigious days off since he began attending UNC. He desperately needs the time off, so it's non-negotiable. I recommended offering to do a semi-telecommute, doing the project she told him about from here, which might even plant the idea of telecommuting from here if he ends up working for SGI.

Andy also destermined today that if we move to California, our chances of getting a house are pretty much zero. He'd have to make an obscene amount of money (at least for someone just hired) to be able to afford the mortgage, and if he doesn't make that much we'd need more (possibly twice as much as my mom paid for the house) for a down payment.

It's sort of discouraging because our apartment complex has this wonderful program wherein 15-25% of your rent can be put toward up to 3% of the cost of a new home, and roommates get equal so Andy and I would effectively get 30-50% of our rent. It expires a year after you move out of the management company's chain of apartments, though, and I seriously doubt we'll want to live in Briarwood again unless they've wired for central air. There's also the fact that rents are so high in the Bay Area, especially if Andy wants his commute to be under an hour, that I don't know that we'd be able to save enough ever to afford a house there. He thinks otherwise, but I'm not so sure.

I noticed yesterday and have noticed again today some oddity with my throat. There's no pain, but it feels as if something is stuck there, especially when I swallow. I'm mostly noting it tonight so that if it doesn't go away in a few days and I have to see yet another doctor, I'll have a time frame. I seriously doubt it's anything, though, since this has happened before and always goes away.

I may've seen a shooting star on my walk, though it was very bright if I did. In fact, at first I thought it was an airplane light, but it completely disappeared very suddenly. I'll check news tomorrow to see if a lot of other people saw and reported it. I definitely saw Cornelius (the forlorn kitty about whom I wrote the other night) on round six of my walk. Since I was about to stop to get mail anyway I broke my stride and petted him. He didn't seem as unhappy tonight, and didn't try to follow me or get me to follow him when I resumed my walk.

My co-worker just bought a house here in San Jose, in a depressed market, and the house was a little under $5k. When he was looking he saw, and I quote, 'a piece of crap cat pee smelling hell hole' that cost $450k just because it was in Willow Glen. CA real estate is scary.

House costs sound like they are the same as down here in South Florida. Blech!

Anyhoo, I wanted to tell you that you stand a good chance to see more shooting stars in the next week or so. The Pleionid's (at least I think that's the one,and how it's spelled) metor shower are starting up with a peak towards the 11th. In places where there aren't an real city lights to interfer with the view it should get up to 1 a minutes around the peak of the shower. In areas with interfering lights you might only see the brighter ones.

Tell me about it. It appears that the only concession to the dot com bust has been that prices have stopped doubling every six months.

If not more so. They start at about half a million, at least new. There might be a chance we could find something affordable used, but then we lose our apartment bonus.

Ooooooh, thank you. That'll certainly give me something to look forward to during the walks. We have a small airport across the street, but I can at least see major constellations on most clear nights, so hopefully I'll be able to see some of the falling stars.
