Grief and White-Hot Anger

I went to Kitty City today just to visit. Andy and I aren't sure if I'm allowed to drive the rental car, but I did anyway. As soon as I walked in one of the Clark's employees said "Kitty City is locked; I'll have to let you in". I had to get some emergency rations for the kitties (I'd meant to go sometime this week, but the car accident sort of eclipsed that), and after I grabbed a bag I started chatting with the clerk checking me out. Kitty City is now locked because Mau Mau and Suzanne are gone.

It might be possible that they're somewhere in the storeroom and the worst that happened was that someone let them out. I doubt it, though. On a scale of 0-9 of cats whom I'd expect to take advantage of an open door, with 9 being the most likely, I'd give Suzanne a 2 and Mau Mau a -1. Lovie, the scruffy red guy, and Blackberry would have been far more likely. The best we can hope for right now is that someone will return them or that the people who took them couldn't afford the adoption fee or something, and the worst that might happen is they'll be declawed.

I'm the only one who has pictures of two. Our camera died en route to Lars and Yee Man's reception. We're desperately hoping it's just the battery, and we'll be going to get a replacement tonight or, if dinner isn't ready in time, early tomorrow. The guy at Ritz Camera, upon hearing the circumstances, has said that if we give him the flash card we can print out pictures of the two for $.49 apiece. At least with that we can make up some "lost" posters for them. Anyway, I'm off -- I'd rather see if we can get this done tonight.

That's awful. I admit, I was surprised when I originally heard that the adoption center was open and people could go in unsupervised. I've seen similar setups, where the cats were in one big room with a lot of trees and toys, but it never occurred to me to try the door. (And I am amazed at the adaptability of any adult cats that can deal with that arrangement -- the ones I had growing up would hide under something and hiss their heads off for a week, or possibly have a heart attack upon being confronted with SEVERAL strange cats.)

I hope that whatever's happened, it will turn out well for the kitties.

We'd very recently discussed locking the room. Now I wish we'd up and done it -- adopting the kitties out is one thing, since we know they're theoretically going to a good home. But losing them like this... maybe it was someone we rejected for some reason; maybe it was someone who couldn't afford the adoption fee or just didn't want to pay it; maybe it's something else.

I am relieved that none of the black cats went missing; it would've been very bad if it'd been both black cats. It would have been exceedingly serious if Blackberry had been the one to go missing because Shadow has demonstrated that she will not survive if they're separated. Even so, Mau Mau was such a sweetheart and Suzanne was a pest, but a cute pest. It was Blackberry and Suzanne who broke in Gail and Heidi's new ball-in-a-ring thingy.

There are occasionally hisses from the cats, especially if one jumps on something which another one is in. Jules and Fern (another sibling pair who can't be separated) had to go home because Fern and Shirley had ireconcilable differences. For the most part, though, I have a feeling the adults are so adaptable because the typical PACA foster home has upwards of a dozen cats around at all times. They have to learn to live with constant feline company, so being dumped in a room with strange cats but a lot of toys doesn't distress them as much as it would, say, Gail.
